The trip to Libya fully met my expectations and it was a joy to travel across the dunes in the 4WD in the desert. The Roman ruins were superb and it was a pleasure to wander around in relative solitude to enjoy and take in the experience. My pictures of the trip have made my friends think that perhaps Libya is not such an odd place to have a holiday. The holiday was an experiment to try out Wild Frontiers and I would have no hesitation in booking again with them.

I chose this trip because I wanted to see the Sahara, up close and personal. Sometimes it felt like we were on another planet, surrounded by weird and wonderful rock formations. At other times it was more like being in a Top Gear Special, racing across the sand flats and over the dunes in our three jeeps, the Tuareg drivers determined not to be left behind. But at no time did the Sahara disappoint. And nor did Tripoli, although to get a real flavour of the legendary warmth and hospitality of the Libyans, try leaving the group for a while and just wandering round alone

The trip to Libya exceeded all my expectations. It is always remarkable to make the adjustment from seeing a country as a shape on a map to being able to picture its people and landscapes and remember its sounds and smells in your imagination. Although the visit was brief, another spot on the globe has come to life for me….and the memories are all good. Thank you.

Where to start? The mix of desert solitude and classical sites was what really appealed, and the trip exceeded expectations. The desert landscapes were incredible - the sense of space, emptiness, and the force of nature. Leptis Magna and Sabratha must be amongst the best classicial sites in the world - and we had them almost to ourselves! A great escape - arab souks, fantastic ancient cities, the vast solitude of the Sahara, and throughout great Libyan hospitality - this trip gave us a real flavour into a fascinating country.

Libya is a fascinating place to visit especially before mass tourism hits. The Wild Frontiers trip was mind blowing from the sheer scale of the ruins at Leptis Magna; the beauty of the villa nearby; the desert in its many different guises; to the ghost town of Ghat - topped with the most delightful Tuareg drivers and cook it was a perfect holiday.

Why Libya? Colourful history; wonderful Punic and Roman sites; fantastic mosaics; knowledgeable local guides; a dozen different types of desert in the Sahara; driving over sand dunes, rock plains and everything in between in ancient Land Cruisers, accompanied by lilting Tuareg music; hospitable Tuareg guides and drivers; camping in the desert; prehistoric cave and wall paintings and carvings; swimming in oases; the superb national museum in Tripoli, exquisite Tuareg jewellery, luscious dates, spice markets and nuts. Jonny B provided seemingly effortless leadership and for a recce trip it worked remarkably well. The other travellers were great company. We can recommend going there but soon, before mass tourism arrives, and of course with Wild Frontiers.

Wild Frontiers have a unique ability to be able to not only find the best guides and support staff (the food was almost cuisine at the desert camp) but also a talent for sniffing out some real gems truly off the beaten track, even for the Libyan outback. Among other memorable experiences was washing my hair at an oasis well, after camping for 5 nights without sight of running water.

Watching the moon rise above a sand dune as I lay snuggled in my sleeping bag in the sand has left a lasting impression of the Sahara. Would like to know whose little footprints were in the sand around my head when I woke up!

I pretty much fell in love with the desert during the ‘Eclipse Tour’ I took with WILD FRONTIERS last year. I wanted to re-visit Leptis Magna and see Sabratha, the Akakus with the rock paintings and climb again the dunes in the Ubari sand sea – it didn’t disappoint.
