Surrounded by some of the most stunning mountains in the world, Gulmarg in the heart of Kashmir offers arguably the best lift-assisted off-piste skiing in the world.
During the latter days of the Raj, the tiny village of Gulmarg in Kashmir was a favourite location for British officers and their wives. With its pristine pine forests and clean, clear air it was a great place for walking and hunting.
Now, with the highest gondola lift anywhere on earth, it is perfect for the alternative skiing holiday: good accommodation and food, excellent guides, no crowds and wonderful skiing… perfect for someone that likes to trail-blaze.
This little developed and under crowded resort has some of the best powder skiing in the world, with vertical drops that can keep you busy all day. From the top of Mount Apharwat any number of runs open up – some that can last for four or five hours into neighbouring valleys to picturesque villages. And if that isn’t enough, get your skins on and go touring and you’ll find even more pristine powder waiting for you to bash.

And the skiing in Kashmir is not all you’ll get. On a trip to Kashmir you can also spend a day and a night in the charming houseboats on Dal Lake at Srinagar, see the sites of Delhi and take an epic flight over the Himalayas.
Come now for skiing in Kashmir before the crowds do – we estimate that the total number of skiers in Gulmarg in 07/08 was about five hundred.
