Afghanistan hardly needs introduction; just the name is enough to have most politicians panicking, journalists packing and travellers salivating with expectation. News, time and again over the centuries, has focused on this most extraordinary arid and mountainous country in middle-Asia and now, as always, its place at the heart of world affairs is as poignant as ever.
Of course it is a land of stunning scenery and a hugely diverse culture but above all it is a place where you will encounter some of the most hospitable, interesting and proud people you are ever likely to meet.
Group Adventure Tours and Tailor-Made Holidays in Afghanistan and on the Silk Road.
Our Afghan Explorer tour takes you through the mountains and plains, following in the footsteps of Marco Polo. From Kabul and the foothills of the Hindu Kush, you will visit the extraordinary city of Herat, the famous mountain caves of Bamiyan, the historical northern towns of Mazar-i-Sharif and Balkh, climaxing in the famous Panjshir Valley. These places are largely unspoiled by the twentieth century, where there are few cars and transport is often by horse or donkey.
And our amazing Wakhan Corridor treks and tours will take you from Tajikistan, over the border at Ishkashim, and high into this extraordinary region of the country. Created by the British as a buffer-zone against perceived Imperial Russian expansionism, it is politically and culturally another world from Afghanistan proper. We ran our first trip here in 2008, had another amazing trek in 2009 and are planning two more trips in 2010.
