A land of vast plains, dunes, wetlands and mountains, this part of Africa includes some of its most striking and vivid landscapes, abundant wildlife and rich cultures. In terms of natural beauty, Namibia boasts some other-worldly landscapes such as the Skeleton Coast, the great orange dunes of the Namib Desert and the Fish River Canyon which is only beaten in scale by the Grand Canyon.
In the North of Namibia the Caprivi Strip, a classic example of colonial politics determining country borders, juts into the African interior where it meets the Zambezi Falls. This part of the country is a real contrast to the arid lands to the South, being well forested and riddled with rivers and wetlands that are host to some fantastic wildlife.
And just to the south of the Caprivi Strip in Botswana lies the Okavango Delta, the river that never finds the sea. This huge inland waterway annually floods thousands of square miles of the Kalahari Desert, forming the largest and most beautiful oasis in Africa. The Delta attracts a huge variety of wildlife, including the big 5 as well as hundreds of species of bird. The Delta is best explored by mokoro, a traditional dug out canoe of the BaiYe people.
