Locked away in its Himalayan fortress, Tibet has long exercised a sirens hold on the imagination of the west. Situated on Qinghai mountain plateau that stretches all the way from India in the south to central China in the north and east, it is a land of wild natural landscapes, obdurate cultures and a peaceful population.
In 2008 WILD FRONTIERS will be running two trips into Tibet: the first concentrating on an area to the east of the region, primarily for the Litang Horse Festival, and the second taking the rarely used southern route to Lhasa.
Home to the Khampa warriors, Sichuan is a remote and rugged region of eastern Tibet, characterised by high mountains, deep alpine gorges and spectacular fortress homes. Equestrian skills, learnt at an early age, are put to the test each year when the nomads and mountain people collect on the grassy plains above Litang. For several days at the beginning of August the air is filled with the sound of jangling horse-bells, thundering hooves and whooping cries as the riders race each other and perform horseback acrobatics, dressed in their traditional finery. Almost unknown to the outside world, this is a festival that has remained unchanged for centuries.
