Ecuador: Ride the Volcanoes (Horse Trek)
13 days, Wed 01 Dec 2010 to Mon 13 Dec 2010
Straddling the equator on the Pacific coast, wedged between Colombia and Peru, the smallest of the Andean nations is packed with the most startling contrasts of scenery and culture. It is said that Ecuador manages to capture an entire continent in one country, and what better way to see it than on horseback?
Starting in the highlands surrounding Otavalo and heading south to Cotopaxi National Park to circumnavigate the world´s highest active volcano, this adventurous horse trek allows riders to witness some of the surreal and magical scenery that makes up the Andes mountain range. Passing through breath-taking, wide-open country, crossing rugged passes, lava strewn valleys, primary woodland and glacial retreats, our ride encompasses a variety of landscapes, spotting condors, foxes and wild horses along the way. To witness firsthand a fascinating variety of life, you will also pass through farmland and villages and stay in some wonderful accommodation, including working haciendas and remote farmhouses. And what better way to finish to trip than by visiting the spa and hot springs at Papallacta to soak those weary limbs. With a multitude of extensions possible – to the Amazon, the Bellavista Cloud Forest and the Galapagos Islands – this has the potential to become a true trip of a life time.
