Borneo: This adventurous trek offers a rare chance to see orang-utans in the wild, amongst the primeval landscapes of Borneo's rainforests. Staying in jungle camps and spending some time with the local Iban people, this is a unique opportunity to experience the true heart of one of the most fascinating destinations in Southeast Asia.
Tour Includes:
Day 1: Kuching - Nanga Sumpa Longhouse
Departing Kuching this morning you spend the next few hours travelling through a rural landscape of plantations and pepper gardens, stopping briefly to visit the colourful native market in Serian, before finally arriving at the Batang Ai reservoir. Continuing by longboat you then head up river to the Namnga Sumpa Longhouse and your river lodge. After dinner you will visit the Iban longhouse for an evening of cultural interaction and some local rice wine. (L,D)
Day 2: Nanga Sumpa Longhouse - Sungai Mawang
After breakfast this morning you trek to Mawang, a journey time of some 4 hours which takes you along rainforest trails that are home to wild orang-utans, pig-tailed macaques and a rich variety of birdlife. This evening you camp beside the river amongst the jungle foliage of Sungai Mawang. (B,L,D)
Day 3: Sungai Mawang - Keladan Pengirup Ai
Breaking camp you head next for Keladan Pengirup Ai, a 6 hour trek that brings you into the pusaka forests of the Iban. Home to towering giants, these forests are revered by the local Iban tribes and it is considered taboo to fell the trees that soar above the forest floor here. After setting up camp you can help the guides to gather some local jungle produce for dinner, watching all the time for the orang-utans that are sometimes seen here foraging at dusk and dawn. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Keladan Pengirup Ai - Nanga Sumpa Longhouse
A 7 hour hike today brings you back to Namga Sumpa Longhouse, a journey that offers a final chance to search out the elusive red apes and some of the other wildlife that inhabit these jungle landscapes before you return to the Delok River. After settling into the lodge and enjoying a well earned dinner, this evening you will cross the river to the longhouse once again, for another evening of berandau (talk) with the locals before settling down for a final evening in the jungle. (B,L,D)
Day 5: Nanga Sumpa Longhouse - Kuching
Depart after breakfast and return down river by boat, where your mini bus will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Kuching. (B,L)
