When I set out on my motorbike to drive from London across Africa nearly 15 years ago I had little idea where my travels would lead – no further than the end of the road in Cape Town I presumed. I had no plan to return on the same machine and then write a book about the journey. But as John Lennon said, ‘Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.’ Three books, a number of articles and many miles later my passion for adventure led to my setting up Wild Frontiers in 1997.
A travel writer needs more than a compelling destination to tell a good story – imagine a goal without a game. We need to discern and then convey the journey itself – to describe the most fascinating factors in the lie of the land, as well as offering an exploration of a native culture and integration with a local people.
And it is upon these principles that I founded Wild Frontiers. The more I travelled, the more I realised that the gap between a traveller and a travel writer is defined only by our pen. I have yet to meet another traveller who does not share my reasons for being in some wild place: a departure from our everyday world and the complete immersion in another through compelling and unforgettable journeys.
At Wild Frontiers, our destinations are those that I found the most beautiful, fascinating and rewarding on my writing assignments and those that friends – now our guides – are equally passionate about. Our combined experience, as people who live and work in the remote regions of the world, enables Wild Frontiers to develop unique itineraries that unlock the secret places that other travellers rarely see.
Our passion to create unparalleled experiences is evident in the eclectic mix of accommodation and means of transport tailored to each trip. Your comfort and convenience is of paramount importance to us as is providing an extraordinary experience and it is our assurance that you will return home both having seen locations and travelled by means uniquely original to Wild Frontiers.
But most importantly, Wild Frontiers introduces its clients to the people whose lands we tread. Exquisite temples and spectacular views are distinguished by those who live among them. We encourage our clients to wander freely amongst the ordinary folk – often our good friends – to enjoy the living culture as well as the ancient. Just by sitting, swapping stories and sharing encounters, you will help enrich their lives, as they will yours. And it is our pledge that for every trip we take into these distant lands, Wild Frontiers will make a donation to our partners in sustainable tourism to ensure that the delicate balance that makes these regions so special will remain so for generations to come.
So come and travel the world and see for yourself these wonderful and distant lands.
